Frequently Asked Questions

What is Pilates?Pilates is a series of exercises designed to target deep muscles; build strength and flexibility and rebalance the body into correct alignment to aid functional, everyday movement. We want our bodies to move with the maximum efficiency but the minimum effort. The exercises based on Joseph Pilates classical matwork sequence will increase your body awareness, strengthen your core and make you feel longer and leaner. The flowing movement combined with controlled breathing and a concentrated mind makes it a great way to release unwanted tension and stress so you'll leave class feeling stronger in body and mind and with a great sense of balance and well-being.
-
Can anybody do Pilates?Pilates is a great form of exercise for anybody, no matter your age or fitness level. If you have any injuries or have been recommended you do Pilates by a medical practitioner then I would kindly request you do a one-on-one session prior to starting group classes so I can fully understand your needs.
-
Why should I do Pilates?Pilates has so many benefits: It builds strength and flexibility It strengthens your core It helps improve posture and counteract the effects of a sedentary lifestyle It helps to shape longer, leaner, stronger muscles It helps release tension and stress It promotes a greater sense of balance and well being It increases body awareness It aids functional, everyday movement and joint mobility

Who was Joseph Pilates?Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates and originally called 'Contrology'. Joseph's method advocates the art of controlled movements which if practiced with consistency can improve flexibility, build strength and develop control and endurance in the entire body. In his book 'Return to Life Through Contrology' Joseph set out a series of 34 classical matwork exercises, stating that Contrology taught "complete coordination of the body, mind and spirit." "Contrology is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace and skill that will unmistakably be reflected in the way you play and the way you work."

I'm new to Pilates, what should I do?If you've had a look at the website and are still unsure about what is best for you, do give me a call on 07956 337231 and we can talk through your options. I will always recommend an 55-Minute Studio Private in the first instance but there are plenty of options to make Pilates work for you.
-
What equipment do you have in the Studio? The studio is equipped with a Cadillac, Reformer and Spine Corrector, as well as a range of the small equipment - Pilates rings, balls, bands and weights.
-
What benefit is there to equipment v mat Pilates? Both are brilliant in their own right. The equipment is a great way to challenge the body and learn more about your movement patterns. It is incredibly supportive for those who need specific rehab work and for those who are unable to get up from the floor unaided. The equipment will give you a better understanding of your own body to apply to the Pilates Matwork. The Pilates Matwork is the ultimate challenge because you are working with only your own body's proprioception and resistance. As your Pilates practice progresses you will start to understand the relationship between the exercises on the equipment and on the mat.

-
Can I select multiple classes and book them all in one go?Yes, there is a cart function and this works whether you are booking classes or privates, online or studio, pay as you go or with a membership plan, or a combination of all of the above.
-
Can I make a recurring booking?Unfortunately not. This feature is not currently from the website provider. The quickest and easiest way to make recurring bookings is to become a Member, purchase a Membership Plan (this will speed up the check out process and reduce the cost per class/session) and then book each class/session individually.
-
I'm a new client - why do you request that I do a private session before joining a Class? This is for numerous reasons: 1. It allows me an opportunity to get to know your body in more detail than in a group environment. 2. If you have any injuries this time will be needed to discuss those and go through the necessary adjustments to the exercises. 3. Even if you've done Pilates before, I haven't taught you before, and every teacher has a different style so its useful for you to get to know my style whilst I get to know more about your body. 4. So as not to disrupt the flow of the group class, many of which has regular clients in. 5. The online classes are not beginner classes and are not suitable for everyone.
-
Why should I purchase a Membership Plan?To bring the cost per class or session down. It will also facilitate a quicker booking process.
-
I've purchased a Membership Plan - where can I manage it?When you purchase a Membership Plan you will receive a confirmation email. Whenever you then book a Class or Private session using your payment plan it will show you during the 'check out' process how classes/sessions you have left. You can also login to the 'Members Area' and under the 'My Subscriptions' section you will see a record of all existing and expired pricing plans. If you haven't used up all the classes/sessions in your pricing plan and it is due to expire you will receive a reminder email. Please note this is base on dates, not how many classes/sessions you have used.
-
How many classes/sessions do I have left in my Membership Plan? Please go to 'My Subscriptions' in the 'Members Area' for a record of your existing and expired Membership Plans.
-
How long do Membership Plans last?Membership Plans are available for 4 or 10 privates or classes. Membership Plans with for 4 privates or classes are valid for 2 calendar months from the start date. Do I need to pay for Zoom to access your classes? No, you don't need to pay for Zoom. You just need to sign up and download the free version from their website: https://zoom.us/signup
-
My Zoom isn't working - can I have refund or reschedule my class/session?acb Pilates cannot held liable for how Zoom operates in your location or chosen device. It is your responsbility to ensure Zoom is working ahead of a class/session.
-
I can't find the Zoom link - where is it?Zoom links for each class or session are autogenerated and sent out within the confirmation email and in the reminder email which you will receive 24 hours ahead of the class or session. You can also log into the 'Members Area', go to 'My Bookings' and you'll be able to access the link there.
-
I have Zoom and I've clicked on the link but its not working - what do I do?This might be for a number of reasons: Firstly, I have a 'waiting room' enabled so you will not given access immediately into the class but rather into a 'virtual waiting room' and I will them admit you. Otherwise it might be something more technical which is not my forte but I would suggest in the first instance you check your internet connection. Often Zoom will tell you if your internet connection is unstable. Otherwise you could try one of the following basis steps: 1. Log out and log in again. 2. Close Zoom down and restart it. 3. Restart your phone/tablet/laptop/computer. Beyond that you are best of contacting Zoom if you have reoccurring issues. I would advise that it is worth keeping on top of the updates that Zoom send out from time to time. This does seem to ensure smooth running of the system.
